NWSC: Putting AI to Work for Uganda's Water Service

2025 Β· Water

← All stories

NWSC (National Water & Sewerage Corporation) is Uganda's national water and sewerage utility β€” and one of Africa's most respected public operators. In December 2025, SUEZ and Sparkoper delivered a hands-on Artificial Intelligence training programme for NWSC's leadership and operational teams in Kampala.

Over four days (8–11 December 2025), around 50 participants β€” from top executives to zone supervisors β€” moved from AI awareness to practical use, working on NWSC's own data to design concrete improvements for field operations, supervision and customer service.

The four-day programme

  • Day 1 β€” AI for water-utility leaders: from awareness to action, for top management.
  • Day 2 β€” AI for field operations: smarter interventions and documentation.
  • Day 3 β€” AI for supervision: from raw data to smart reporting and KPIs.
  • Day 4 β€” AI for customer service: better responses, faster.

Working on real NWSC data

Rather than generic examples, teams applied AI to their own datasets:

  • Customer complaints β€” reclassification, pattern detection, sharper prioritisation and quick service-quality wins.
  • Meter tracking β€” spotting anomalies such as inactive meters and inconsistent readings, and revenue-recovery opportunities.
  • Sewage-truck (cesspool) operations β€” route efficiency, service-level monitoring and new sanitation KPIs.

Outcomes

  • β‰ˆ 50 leaders and managers trained, across a strategic tier (Day 1) and an operational tier (Days 2–4).
  • Strong assessment results and high engagement throughout.
  • Managers proposed actionable pilot ideas tied to NWSC priorities.
  • A shared roadmap toward additional revenue, better customer experience and cost efficiency.

What's next: Phase 2 (February 2026)

Building on these results, Sparkoper, SUEZ and NWSC's International Resource Centre agreed on a second phase β€” a β€œtraining-of-trainers” programme for around 50 participants β€” to grow NWSC's internal AI champions and prepare pilot projects in field operations, supervision, customer service and non-revenue water (NRW).
